about

A whale carcass which has drifted to the bathyal or abyssal zone serves as a thriving and ever-changing oasis in a desert of nothingness. During the first two years, scavengers pick the carcass clean at a rate of 88-132 pounds per day. For another two years, organisms settle in the nutrient rich sediments and bones. Then over the course of up to a century, sulphophilic bacteria, clams, and boring worms break down the lipids in the bones until nothing remains.
